Strange characters from Word are displaying

The strange characters are from Word “smart quotes”.

If the interviewers are typing into Word then pasting into the browser, Word defaults to using special non-standard glyphs for quotes, single tick marks, hyphens, and fractions like 1/2; they look nice in Word but nothing else understands them.
